Why You Need The Arts in Your Workplace

Challenges
We live in a technological age, with a high premium on individualized study and success. Sometimes our education ill prepares us for the realities of working with real people, (possibly in groups), or for finding creative solutions and thus for perhaps being wrong.

We can be overwhelmed by the demands of both 'real' work and 'real' life and perhaps susceptible to illness. As businesses look to succeed in their field, the most valuable worker is one who works well in groups, is willing and able to voice a new idea and who can stay well.

A Solution
Creative activity, whether it is through writing, visual art, music, or movement leads to improved work and improved health. Creativity can be practiced in groups or alone and in either case will build confidence in ones ability to problem solve. Thus, we can begin to address the 'problems' of work and of our personal life with greater success.

Healthcare Issues
As healthcare costs increase, creating pressure on employers and their employees, we are all looking for ways to support and enhance the health and wellbeing of those in the workforce. Healthy employees means fewer sick days, better focus and ultimately better overall production. Throughout the country companies are seeking to find ways to bring better health opportunities to the workplace, including massage, exercise rooms, nurse practitioners and representatives of different spiritual practices. If we are not able to offer full coverage health insurance, we can offer opportunity for better health care on site.

Research studies have demonstrated that well planned and facilitated creative arts experiences can address many of the basic health care needs of the average individual. Many of these activities can also facilitate recovery from illness and sustain better health. Stress, poor interpersonal communication, lack of time and skills to self awareness and to connect with a spiritual source of strength and comfort, all contribute to poor health and life style choices.

The Employer/Employee Relationship
The employer can make available the time and space for employees to address these areas, to build skills and confidence in their own ability to be well.
Building a good faith relationship with those who work for you goes along way to meeting basic needs and expectations of both parties.
Productivity and commitment to the company improve when people feel looked after. Better workplace skills leads to more efficient and competent work.
